Shannons Spirit

Shannons Spirit

Shannons Insurance will get into the spirit of this year’s 25th Anniversary Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motor Sport with its largest-ever presence at the motoring enthusiasts’ event since its inception.

On top of the 500 racing, sports and touring cars competing at this year’s ‘Classic, Shannons will be hosting around 1,100 special vehicles in the public areas – a record 750 in the ‘Shannons Walk’ area for car clubs and a further 150 special vehicles on both the Saturday and Sunday in the Expo Centre opposite Gardner Straight.

A further 75 classic vehicles will assemble at San Remo from 7.30am on the Sunday morning to take part in the annual Shannons Cavalcade.

The vehicles will leave San Remo after a breakfast organised by the Kilcunda Football Club to travel in convoy to the circuit. Then shortly after midday they will part in a special celebratory tour of the 4.55km Grand Prix track.

To get into the Classic spirit of the meeting, which for the third year running has been shortlisted as one of the World’s Best Historic Motor Sport events, all Shannons staff will dress in period-style white overalls with special event badges.

The most controversial of these is one celebrating Captain ‘N.G.K’ (Peter) Janson, the swashbuckling Melbourne social ‘Godfather’ who one year at Bathurst convinced CAMS his initials were N.G.K. Janson in order to run his spark plug sponsor’s name on the top of his windscreen at a time when advertising in that place was banned.

Peter Janson has been a regular at the Phillip Island Classic and is again expected to be at this year’s event.

Most VHRR and Mini Club officials at the meeting will also be wearing similarly-labelled white dust coats to complement the event’s historic theme.

Shannons will also be hosting a ‘Legends of Motor Sport’ autograph session at the Shannons Super Rig from 1.30pm-2.30pm on the Sunday, with various motor racing luminaries including seven-time Bathurst winner Jim Richards signing posters and programmes.

The 2014 Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motor Sport presented by the VHRR is again being supported by Shannons, CoolDrive and Penrite, with additional support this year from Dutton Garage, Repco, Zagame, RDA Brakes and Trico.
